Whiffen Residence

Building Envelope, Forensic Assessment, New Construction, Residential - 2015-2018

About The Project

Isthmus Architecture provided architectural services leading to the comprehensive restoration and expansion of this lake home in  the Village of Maple Bluff, originally designed and expanded by prominent local architect Frank Riley. This sprawling house occupies a secluded peninsula on Lake Mendota. Three generations of the Whiffen family have called it home. The current family members envisioned returning to the home as a primary residence. The project began with an analysis of the current neighborhood context, future development potential and an intensive survey of the existing condition, finishes and furnishings. The project restored of most of the house and included expansion of the kitchen, a new glass conservatory and a second floor addition of a master suite. Full mechanical, electrical, plumbing, security and data upgrades ensure the family continued enjoyment for future generations. The result is a very livable 8,500 square foot sanctuary within a historic urban neighborhood that respects the character and intent of its original architect.
